Did you know that most people who experience depression (also called major depression) can get better with treatment? The combination of medication and talk therapy is typically most effective.

To familiarize yourself with symptoms of depression, check the following list, compiled by the National Institute of Mental Health. (Note: The number and severity of symptoms can vary, depending on the individual and the particulars of his or her illness.)

  • Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” feelings
  • Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness
  • Irritability, restlessness
  • Loss of interest in once-pleasurable activities, including sex
  • Fatigue and decreased energy
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions
  • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness or excessive sleeping
  • Overeating or appetite loss
  • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
  • Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease with treatment
